Fall / Winter 2022

Wow, what an incredible summer we had at the hostel, yet again. To be honest, once the pandemic hit us during the summer months of 2022 I thought that it would take quite some time for tourism to recover but I can happily admit, that I was wrong. Alaska became a destination that many people from the Lower 48 chose to escape to and thought to be a great place to adventure. Unlike pre-pandemic, we mostly saw guests from within the Continental US and Canada. Traveling still involved too much hassle for many, with countries requiring Covid tests and proof of vaccinations.

Incredibly lucky I felt when my summer crew showed up and decided to help out at my hostel for the next few months. What an awesome bunch of people I thought. Not only is it important to present my hostel in a friendly and clean manner but their getting along so well with each other, laughing and engaging in activities together makes for happy vibes and happy guests.

As throughout every hostel season, there is never a day without surprises and exciting adventurers showing up at the doorstep. Whether it was a skateboarder trying to skate to Seattle or the guy on a Vespa (tiny motorcycle) traveling around the world. The 80-year-old woman bicycling the Parks Hwy crashed in Healy, or the countless couples riding to Prudhoe Bay, The van lifers looking for a fun place to rest their hats ready for a get-together at the fire pit. We hosted the Yukon River canoe race champs and the 10 archeologist students looking for artifacts in the Delta area. We loved seeing those awesome rock arrowheads. The Basecamp fills me with joy and happiness even after my 10th season came to an end this fall.

I love to host and love to mingle with people from all around the world, offering a safe and comfortable place to stay. Again, I'm already looking forward to another season next summer and can't wait to greet all of you who decide to stop at Sven's Basecamp Hostel on your own personal adventure in Alaska.
