3 weeks to go!!

The Hostel is slowly but surely waking up from its long and deep winter sleep. The snow is melting fast now, and I cannot believe that just 2 weeks ago the temperatures were still hovering around 20 below at night. How nice it is to work in 60 above weather, shoveling decks and entry ways, cleaning the parking lot, and shaking off the cobwebs that built over the long winter months.

For our busy summer season of 2021, we will have 3 employees helping, managing, and running the Basecamp. Halle and Jared have been living the van life for a couple of years and have always dreamed of coming to Alaska one day with their van. They just arrived in the Interior and since they will not start work until May 1st, they are now touring around our beautiful state, exploring some various sites so they will be able to share their new “Alaska knowledge” with you. I am excited for them to join the Hostel crew, especially hearing that Halle is a social media pro and Jared knows a thing or two in the “handyman department”. My friend Madeline has taken on the responsibility to beautify the property with flowers of all colors. She is way more talented with flowers than me, who generally kills them within a month.

Excited to hear and see all those faces, ready to tackle Alaska’s wild. This porch, kitchen area is my favorite place to drink coffee and talk with guests. I love beautiful, sunny and lively mornings at the hostel. Move out of the way winter, we are…

All snow is off the roof and pretty soon our main office will be ready to check you in again.

A little snow still has to melt before the first volleyball game can be held.

-        Covid-19 update:

The State of Alaska has had such an awesome vaccine rollout that they are able to provide vaccines to all visitors who are entering the Fairbanks airport. It is all voluntarily of course but what an awesome opportunity to get a free Covid-19 shot while visiting our beautiful land. In the Fairbanks area, everything is open, and nothing is restricted. People who want to wear mask are highly encouraged to do so and people who do not want to are just as welcome at Sven’s. This is a free country, so it is your free choice. We respect all opinions about Covid, and we will make sure you feel safe and sound while staying with us.

Summer 2021 is just around the corner and I cannot wait to greet our first guests in just about 3 weeks. Ooohhh Hostel life, how much I love you…..Another big change is that I’ve rented my home up north and will be staying in my camper all summer long. No more driving home after a long day at work but just a few steps and I’m in bed……..I acquired this camper 4 years ago from my friend Hazel and it has been a comfortable home to many of my friends and family from Switzerland who came to help me out over the years. Now it’s my turn to finally enjoy the van life a little bit………Super excited !!!

Have a great week everybody and stay tuned for the big news and new addition to my Basecamp in my next blog………

Cheers,
Sven
